TIMELINE OF EVENTS

Earth-199999 (Earth-616 in-universe)
2023

  • The events of Avengers: Endgame play out as they did, concluding with Steve Rogers returning every Infinity Stone taken from their respective timelines.

Earth-199998
1949

  • After returning the last Infinity Stone to its rightful timeline, Steve travels back to what he thinks is the year 1949 of his own Earth, but is in fact Earth-199998. Earth-199998 is identical to Earth-199999 in every way, except for the deviations of events Steve will - knowingly and unknowingly - cause during his stay.

  • Steve’s time-space GPS device gets damaged upon his arrival on Earth-199998, and he’s unable to return to his own timeline.

  • Against his better judgment, Steve tracks down Peggy Carter and pretends he’s the Steve Rogers of that timeline, who crashed the HYDRA plane Valkyrie and has been buried in ice since 1945.

  • Steve rejoins the Strategic Scientific Reserve (SSR), alongside Peggy, and Howard Stark.

  • Steve bars Arnim Zola from joining the SSR as part of Operation Paperclip, citing Zola’s allegiance to HYDRA and Johann Schmidt as a major liability to the organization, even with the scientific knowledge he could potentially bring to the table. Zola is returned to prison, where he spends the rest of his life.

  • Because of Steve’s intervention, HYDRA never infiltrates S.H.I.E.L.D., and is effectively neutralized. Thus, any scientific advancement that Zola was responsible for on Earth-199999 is never achieved (e.g. Tesseract-based weaponry, Bucky’s robotic arm, etc), and the world is slightly worse off for it.

  • Steve marries Peggy.

Earth-199998
1950

  • In an attempt to synthesize Vibranium and create a new shield for Steve, Howard inadvertently develops the virtually indestructible metal Proto-Adamantium. He forges a new shield for Steve out of this Proto-Adamantium, but is unable to reproduce the circumstances that would allow him to create more of the indestructible metal.

  • Steve leads a search for Bucky, and finds him alive in a Soviet prison. Upon recovery, Bucky joins the SSR as one of their agents.

Earth-199998
1955

  • Steve, Peggy, and Howard become founding members of S.H.I.E.L.D., a full 10 years early from its Earth-199999 counterpart.

  • The Ten Rings rises to fill the void that HYDRA would have occupied, becoming a major threat in the coming decades.

  • Howard develops a robotic prosthesis to replace Bucky’s missing arm, allowing him to return to active duty alongside Steve.

Earth-199998
1963

  • Steve, with Bucky at his side, fails to stop the Ten Rings from assassinating JFK.

  • As a result of JFK’s assassination, S.H.I.E.L.D. loses the public’s trust; Steve and Peggy begin work developing what would turn out to be the first incarnation of Project: Avengers.

Earth-199998
1965

  • Steve convinces Hank Pym to join S.H.I.E.L.D., a full 5 years early from Hank’s recruitment on Earth-199999.

  • Hank begins work on what will come to be known as Pym Particles.

Earth-199998
1968

  • Hank, with the help of Bill Foster, creates a suit capable of harnessing the power of Pym Particles, perfecting it a year later into what would eventually be known as the Ant-Man suit.

Earth-199998
1969

  • Hank joins Steve and Bucky on covert S.H.I.E.L.D. missions under the codename “Ant-Man” as part of Project: Avengers.

Earth-199998
1980

  • The Soviets discover Earth-199998 Steve in the ice, and free him from his icy slumber. Earth-199998 Steve is brainwashed and turned into the Winter Soldier, the Soviet’s deadliest assassin.

  • Janet Van Dyne joins Project: Avengers with her own Pym tech suit, operating under the codename “Wasp”.

Earth-199998
1987

  • Hank quits Project: Avengers after Janet’s apparent death while on a mission to disarm a Soviet missile.

Earth-199998
1989

  • Hank quits S.H.I.E.L.D. upon discovering the organization’s attempts to replicate his Pym Particle technology. Steve and Peggy fail to convince him to stay.

Earth-199998
1991

  • Soviet agents assassinate Peggy in order to steal S.H.I.E.L.D.’s remaining super-serum. Howard Stark is gravely injured in his attempt to save Peggy.

  • Steve, along with Bucky, hunt down the perpetrators, but Bucky is killed by Alexei Shostakov, the Red Guardian. In a blind rage, Steve nearly kills Shostakov with his own shield, before finding the restraint to allow the authorities to take Shostakov into custody.

Earth-199998
1992

  • Steve mourns Peggy and Bucky’s deaths, and quits S.H.I.E.L.D.

  • Steve begins traveling the country, helping others he finds along the way. While on his travels, he realizes that he can prevent Peggy and Bucky’s deaths by going back in time.

  • Steve reaches out to Hank and Howard to tell them the truth about himself and try to smooth things over between them so they can work together and help him fix his broken time-space GPS device. Hank and Howard tell him they’re limited by the technology of their time, and they’re unable to help fix the device.

Earth-199998
1994

  • Howard and Maria Stark are assassinated by Earth-199998 Steve under orders of the Soviets. Earth-199998 Steve steals Howard’s plans for a much more advanced arc reactor for Project: Crimson Dynamo.

  • Tony Stark inherits Stark Industries at the age of 24.

  • Steve returns to New York to offer comfort to a grieving Tony, but the younger Stark has nothing but disdain for Steve, blaming him for taking away much of Howard’s time at S.H.I.E.L.D. and causing the elder Stark to neglect his son. Steve returns to the road after Tony’s rebuke.

Earth-199998
1998

  • After years on the road, Steve settles in a small town in Arizona.

Earth-199998
2001

  • Steve makes a brief return to New York in an attempt to reconcile with Tony, but is again rebuked.

  • Steve gets wind of a Ten Rings plot to bomb Times Square on New Year’s Eve, and prevents it from happening. Even though there are reports of a “Good Samaritan” helping to subdue the terrorists, no one knows the identity of the “Good Samaritan”, as Steve remained incognito the entire time.

Earth-199998
2007

  • Nick Fury is appointed director of S.H.I.E.L.D. Fury is aware of Steve’s true nature as a time traveler from conversations with Hank years prior to his appointment as director, but keeps the knowledge to himself.

Earth-199998
2009

  • Tony is kidnapped by the Ten Rings while in Afghanistan. Upon his rescue and subsequent return to the USA, Steve once again comes back to New York. This time he watches over Tony from the shadows.

  • Events play out mostly as seen in “Iron Man”, with very little interference from Steve as he thinks Tony needs to go through his trial by fire to become Iron Man.

  • After Tony defeats Obadiah Stane (as the Iron Monger), Steve returns to Arizona, convinced that Tony is on the path to becoming the Iron Man he once knew.

  • Fury approaches Tony about the “Avengers Initiative”, in an attempt to revive Project: Avengers.

  • Fury tracks down Steve and tries to convince him to return to S.H.I.E.L.D. and revive Project: Avengers, but Steve declines, still unable to get over his failure at protecting Peggy and Bucky.

Earth-199998
2010

  • Because HYDRA never infiltrated S.H.I.E.L.D. or positions of influence in government, Senator Stern never drags Tony to a senate hearing to force him to hand over the Iron Man suit to the military.

  • The Soviets approach Ivan Vanko and recruit him for Project: Crimson Dynamo. Vanko not only further perfects the arc reactor based on the plans stolen from Howard in 1994, but helps the Soviets build their own Iron Man armor, dubbed the Crimson Dynamo.

  • Vanko steals the Crimson Dynamo armor and stages an attack on Tony, wanting revenge for what Howard did to Ivan’s father when they worked together developing the arc reactor decades ago.

  • Tony, in addition to dealing with Palladium poisoning, is injured in the attack, leading to Colonel James Rhodes taking over as Iron Man while Tony recovers. Rhodes manages to subdue Vanko and turns him over to the authorities. The Crimson Dynamo armor is destroyed in battle.

  • Tony manages to create a new element as a safer, more powerful substitute for the Palladium in his arc reactor.

  • Rhodes somewhat convinces Tony of the need for skilled operators to be able to use his technology to protect the public and people like him, so Tony works with Rhodes to create a suit for Rhodes’ exclusive use under the command of the U.S. military.

  • The events of “The Incredible Hulk” play out mostly as seen in the movie, with very little deviation from Earth-199999’s events.

Earth-199998

  • Fury approaches Steve once again, explaining the gravity of the situation, and this time Steve agrees to help. Additionally, Fury manages to bring in Tony, Natasha Romanoff, and Bruce Banner into the fold. Events play out mostly as seen in “The Avengers” up to Loki being taken into custody by S.H.I.E.L.D., with Thor joining the team after Loki’s capture.

  • Steve uses his knowledge of the future to thwart Loki’s plans before he can act on them. The Avengers manage to rescue Selvig, Clint, and others before the Tesseract can be used to open a portal for Loki’s Chitauri army.

  • Due to Steve’s intervention, the Battle of New York never happens, as the Chitauri remain stranded in space. Because there is no alien invasion, Adrian Toomes does not get his hands on alien technology to become the Vulture, nor does Damage Control get established.

  • The events of “Ant-Man” play out mostly as seen in the movie, with very little deviation from Earth-199999’s events.

  • The events of “Iron Man 3” play out mostly as seen in the movie, with the exception of Tony never experiencing PTSD from having battled aliens. Aldrich Killian’s plot to assassinate the president is thwarted, and he is killed with the help of Rhodes in his government-sanctioned Iron Patriot armor.

  • Even though Fury knows the truth about Steve and Earth-199998 Steve, there is nothing he can do until he gathers enough evidence to prove that the Soviets had compromised Earth-199998 Steve into doing their bidding. Fury, with the full might of S.H.I.E.L.D. and the U.S. military, stages an attack on the Soviets.

  • Steve and Natasha go on the run, and Natasha reveals everything she knows from her time working for the Soviets and partnering with Earth-199998 Steve, both professionally and romantically.

  • Once Steve has his name cleared, his status as a time traveler becomes public knowledge.

  • Steve seeks out Hank, Tony, and Bruce to help fix the time-space GPS device, but while the trio manage to get the device functioning again, they caution that they are unable to bridge a connection to Steve’s original timeline. If Steve uses the device to travel through the Quantum Realm, he may end up in random points along the timeline instead of his intended destination. It’s a risk Steve is willing to take.

  • After handing over a dossier comprising of key information about the future to Fury, Steve says goodbye to the Avengers and the friends he’s made along the way, and attempts to return to his own timeline.
